Start with the bowl
Warm the bowl if you like, then dry it well. Sift the matcha first to avoid small clumps and make whisking easier.
A modest amount of cooler water often gives a softer, more balanced result than boiling water.
Whisk with purpose
Whisk briskly from the wrist rather than stirring heavily from the shoulder. The aim is an even, lively bowl with a smooth surface and a fine foam.
If the tea tastes flat, try adjusting temperature before increasing the amount of powder.
Repeat and adjust
Good preparation is repeatable. Notice what works, then make small changes to suit the tea and your own taste.
The ritual need not feel formal. What matters is giving the leaf enough attention to show itself clearly.
