A bamboo whisk, or chasen, helps disperse tea powder and bring a fine foam to matcha. Use a light, quick motion across the surface of the bowl rather than pressing the tines into the base.

Soften the tines briefly in warm water before use. Whisk gently in a W motion. Rinse with water after use; avoid detergent.
